The Gaachh Kouto is a red-coloured wooden pot containing vermilion or sindoor, and a silver coin, which is believed as an accessory of Goddess Lakshmi. So Gaach Kouto symbolizes bringing wealth and blessings of Maa Lakshmi.
Gaachh Kouto is an inseparable accessory of a newlywed Bengali bride. She has to carry this from the beginning of the wedding to till the time she enters the house of her in-laws after her wedding.
Gachh means tree or plant. Devi Lakshmi is the provider of wealth i.e. food, clothes, home and all such other essential wealth of life and living. If you look at a Lakshmi idol, you will see She carries a “jhappi” in her left hand. That is the “Gachh Kouto” because it contains the seeds of all the plants — rice, wheat, pulses, spices, herbs etc etc etc — on which our life depends.
