Gitanjali is a collection of Bengali Stories by Rabindranath Tagore
Art and worship are two inseparable elements in Indian cultural understanding and Rabindranath Tagore was the champion artiste in assimilating these two components most strongly. _Gitanjali_ is a collection of poems by Tagore that literally means offerings to the Almighty through songs or song offerings. The original Bengali collection was published in 1910 and contained 156 poems, rather lyrics, and the English translation, _Song Offerings_ came out in 1912 having 103 songs translated into English by Tagore himself. _Song Offerings_, published by the Indian Society in London, contained 53 poems from _Gitanjali_ and 50 other poems from Tagore's other anthologies. The English _Gitanjali_ was very popular in the West and was widely translated. Tagore, in the poems of _Song Offerings_, pondered over the connection between the human and the Divine. The divinity-devotee relationship is the core of these songs. All the songs uniquely portray that God is the centre of the poet's inspiration. Tagore has successfully been able to disclose that his goal is to be united and connected with the supreme spiritual power as God has given him the most precious gift, namely, life. He would, thus, sing in His glory and keep his soul clean for the Almighty. Tagore has always been considered to be the most important literary and cultural icon of India and has used prominent linguistic features in the poems of _Song Offerings_. Tagore has superbly used several stylistic devices to narrate the conversation between the Divine and the worshipper to express his fathomless devotion and surrender to the supreme.
